Green Cement Technology Tracker

The Green Cement Technology Tracker gathers public announcements of investments in technologies for the production of low-carbon cement. Tracked investments are aligned with corporate climate goals consistent with the Paris Agreement. Cement and concrete account for around 7% of global CO₂ emissions. This tracker and database are the result of a collaboration between the Leadership Group for Industry Transition (LeadIT) and the Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA).

Aimed at accelerating technology adoption and advancing global decarbonization, this tool is designed to support the cement industry in fulfilling its commitments and progressing towards achieving net-zero emissions.

The Green Cement Technology Tracker gathers investment announcements related to technologies aimed at reducing carbon dioxide emissions in the cement sector. The dataset currently captures public announcements of investments in carbon capture technologies and clay calcination kilns for calcined clay production.

The tracker’s role is to provide data and insights that strengthen accountability and monitor the progress of the cement sector. This information aids better decision-making and ensures that the industry’s commitments, as set out in programmes such as the GCCA 2050 Roadmap for Net-Zero Concrete, can be monitored.

Developed through a collaboration between the Leadership Group for Industry Transition (LeadIT) and the Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA), this tool is hosted by LeadIT. This tool is part of LeadIT’s suite of trackers dedicated to overseeing the decarbonization of heavy industries.

The main target users of the tool are decision-makers in policy, industry, academia, and civil society interested in the decarbonisation of the cement industry.

The tool serves as a decision-support platform, providing:

  • Data on public announcements of investments in technologies that reduce emissions from cement manufacturing and presenting them transparently in one place.
  • Insights into industry trends and potential collaborations, fostering best practices through a comprehensive database of project announcements.

The Green Cement Tracker, hosted by the Leadership Group for Industry Transition (LeadIT) was initiated in 2022 through a collaborative effort between the Leadership Group for Industry Transition (LeadIT) and the Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA). Launched in 2023, the tool seeks to support the cement industry in meeting its commitments and progressing towards net-zero emissions.

The tracker presents announced investments in projects that leverage technology alternatives with significant potential to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the cement sector will be used. The technology categories tracked are guided by the GCCA 2050 Roadmap for Net-Zero Concrete. As of the end of 2023, the tracker monitors investment announcements in carbon capture technologies and kilns for clay calcination.

The tool is open-source, free and open-access. It can be explored on LeadIT’s website. The Tracker is based on online resources, including official project announcements, industry reports, relevant media outlets, and relevant and trustworthy publications. URLs for each source are available in the tracker database.
