Green technologies are swiftly emerging within the steel industry, with companies making ambitious announcements about low-carbon investments and innovations. The Green Steel Tracker is a database that reviews these announcements and makes the information available.
The Green Steel Tracker provides users with interactive visual tools and the option to download the dataset. Users can explore a geographical map showcasing areas with low-carbon investments and a chart categorizing steel companies based on their announced climate commitments. For a more in-depth understanding, users can delve into the data by downloading the database spreadsheet.
The data may help decision makers in industry and policy to develop strategies for new technologies and show how quickly climate targets can be met in the steel sector.
The database is a collaboration between research and non-governmental organizations and is hosted by LeadIT. This tool is part of LeadIT’s suite of trackers dedicated to overseeing the decarbonization of heavy industries.
The main target users of the tool are decision-makers in policy, industry, academia, and civil society who are interested in the decarbonization of the steel industry.
The tool serves as a decision-support platform, offering:
The Green Steel Tracker, hosted by the Leadership Group for Industry Transition (LeadIT) was initiated in 2021 through a collaborative effort between research and non-governmental organisations. At its inception, the tracker aimed to fulfil the need for comprehensive data sources that capture investments in technologies for low-carbon steel production.
The tracker consolidates and classifies low-carbon projects in the primary steel sector. Projects are distinguished based on technology and classified by their transparency level, with three project tracking categories: main, complementary, and weak ambition. Detailed information on project selection and classification can be found in the tracker’s methodology.
The tool is open-source, free and open-access. It can be explored on LeadIT’s website. The Tracker is based on online resources, including official project announcements, industry reports, relevant media outlets, and relevant and trustworthy publications. URLs for each source are available in the tracker database.
