Barriers and enablers to decarbonising UK manufacturing: views of technical experts and trade organisations

If the UK is to meet net-zero targets, there has to be a unified approach to improving reduction and reuse of resources in the UK’s foundation industries and their supply chains. The Transforming Foundation Industries Research and Innovation Hub (TransFIRe) explores how these changes can be made whilst working with communities in which foundation industries are located.

The Transforming Foundation Industries Research and Innovation Hub (TransFIRe) aims to facilitate transformative change in UK industries; the work is both research and practice-driven. TransFIRe works to optimize resource use in six foundation industries and their respective supply chains:

  • metals
  • cement
  • ceramics
  • chemicals
  • glass
  • paper

For this report, 12 TransFIRe technical academic leads and seven trade organisation representatives were interviewed. They were given prompts for innovations around the use of resources, and given the option to suggest further innovations of their own. Participants then had to outline the barriers and enablers for each innovation. The opening graphic summarizes the key messages and shows where trade organisations and academic leads share the same insights, and where they differ. Shared barriers included lack of infrastructure or poor incentives to recycling, whilst participants agreed that initiatives such as regulation changes and financial support would enable innovation in the sectors.
