Centre Director

Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) is seeking a new Centre Director for its Oxford centre. SEI Oxford is one of eight global centres of SEI, a leading research institute focused on sustainable development. SEI’s mission is to support decision-making and induce change by providing integrative knowledge that bridges science, policy and practice in the fields of environment and development.

As Centre Director, you will lead the strategic direction of SEI Oxford. You will work closely with leadership teams based at SEI headquarters (HQ) in Stockholm and other Centre Directors. You will also help strengthen SEI’s visibility in the UK by deepening collaboration between SEI Oxford and SEI York.

About SEI Oxford

SEI Oxford specializes in climate change adaptation and transdisciplinary methods of engaging diverse audiences with social and environmental research. We conduct innovative research and develop new frameworks, tools, and platforms to steer policies and practices towards sustainability. Our work ranges from global to local levels, including projects in low- and middle-income countries such as India and Kenya, as well as EU countries and the UK. Our centre is located near Oxford train station, and we are currently expanding our team and projects.

The role

As Centre Director at SEI Oxford, you will focus on three main areas:

  1. Strategy and implementation: develop and deliver SEI’s global strategy at the local level, including setting the research agenda, managing operations, ensuring financial sustainability and producing annual work plans and results reports for SEI HQ.
  2. Leadership and support: lead and support our team, fostering engagement and helping staff to reach their full potential. You will initiate and implement organizational strategies and address employee-related matters in line with SEI’s philosophy, mission and goals.
  3. Relationship building and representation: build and maintain relationships with partners, clients and funders. Represent SEI Oxford at seminars and conferences, promote and strengthen our network, and engage with policy and decision-makers.

As a member of SEI’s global management team, you will report to the SEI Executive Director and serve on the SEI Oxford Board of Directors. You will also co-lead efforts to enhance collaboration between SEI Oxford and SEI York.

Key duties and responsibilities

  • Achieve SEI’s 2025-2029 strategy at SEI Oxford, working closely with global SEI centres.
  • Lead the development and implementation of SEI Oxford’s work programs, including monitoring, evaluation and learning, and produce annual work plans and results reports for SEI HQ.
  • Manage the Centre’s employees and operations, ensuring the development and implementation of policies and procedures.
  • Ensure financial sustainability and growth by identifying resource requirements and funding sources, building relationships with external partners.
  • Support the professional development of SEI Oxford staff, including enhancing collaboration with SEI York at the University of York.
  • Lead efforts to register the centre as an Independent Research Organization with UKRI, by expanding research staff and supporting PhD attainment.

Collaborate with researchers and communications teams in SEI Oxford and SEI York to raise the profile of SEI’s work in the UK, engaging with policy and other decision-makers, research collaborators, funders and local partners.

Who you are

You are passionate about environmental sustainability and development. You bring excellent leadership skills and can engage, empower and support staff to grow SEI Oxford. You can provide clear direction, delegate effectively and build trusting professional relationships. We are looking for a candidate with several years of experience in leadership, people management and strategy development and implementation.

Requirements

  • A Master’s degree (or higher) in a field relevant to SEI.
  • A reputation in research related to at least one of SEI’s strategy areas.
  • Proven track record in fundraising for research and/or development.
  • Demonstrated experience in leadership, strategy and people management.
  • Experience in a knowledge-based research organization.
  • Excellent English language skills, both spoken and written.
  • Experience in driving strategy development and implementation.

Personal skills

You should have a strong interest in leadership and a commitment to developing and improving the organization. You should be enthusiastic about influencing, leading and inspiring staff, driving a culture of commitment, innovation and engagement. Strong communication and relationship-building skills are essential.

Additional information

This full-time position at SEI Oxford, UK, is for a four-year term and includes a standard six-month probation period. SEI Oxford offers a hybrid work environment, with staff currently required to be on-site at least two days a week.

  • Salary range: GBP 70,000-80,000 per annum.
