Innovations helping small-scale operators cut greenhouse gas emissions

Anderson Kehbila, SEI Africa Programme leader for Natural Resources and Ecosystems, was featured in Kenya’s Nation newspaper. He explained that transitioning to a low-carbon economy by promoting greenhouse gas absorption equal to emissions through renewable energy, energy conservation, electrification of transportation, and carbon capture and storage will aid in climate change mitigation.

This article highlighted the significance of small-scale operators in farming, agroprocessing, and manufacturing switching to low-carbon energy sources for their industrial, commercial and agricultural activities. These efforts help reduce emissions and capture carbon in soil and vegetation. By utilizing clean energy resources, reducing production waste, minimizing pollution and mitigating environmental impacts, these operators contribute to a more sustainable future.

Anderson Kehbila emphasized that innovation in entrepreneurship is crucial for transitioning to a low-carbon economy. He also highlighted the need for a long-overdue behavioural change in energy efficiency and conservation by continental leadership, which can be achieved through the adoption of renewable energy technologies. He added that repurposing farm subsidies will encourage commercial farmers to adopt more sustainable climate-friendly food production practices.

These practices protect soil structure, conserve moisture, suppress weeds and pests, and can create new carbon sinks over longer time. For example, conservation or no-till agriculture increases biomass and soil organic carbon as well as nutrient and water availability through agronomic and other resource-conserving practices. Many smaller scale farmers have already adopted sustainable farming methods focused on soil health.
