Harriette Adhiambo Okal, an Associate Scientist specializing in Water Systems at SEI – Africa, spoke to CGTN Africa, shedding light on the dire situation, particularly in Africa, where communities are engaged in devastating water conflicts resulting in loss of life. While government policies exist to better manage this precious resource, Okal emphasizes the critical need for effective implementation.
Translating policies into action remains a significant challenge, not just in Kenya but across Africa. The necessary data on water resources is already available, yet effective implementation lags behind.

Water scarcity poses a significant threat to global economies, with over 40 percent of the population residing in water-scarce regions and a quarter of the world’s GDP vulnerable to this issue. This scarcity impacts agriculture severely, leading to food shortages and desperation due to disrupted irrigation.
Beyond agriculture, reduced water levels also affect hydropower production, resulting in power shortages and economic downturns.
However, there is hope in technological innovations such as remote sensing for identifying fresh water sources and desalination for converting seawater. Additionally, upgrading infrastructure and implementing smart water grids can help efficiently distribute water resources, emphasizing the importance of responsible water management for securing our future prosperity.
Water is not just a resource; it is a lifeline. When managed responsibly, it secures our future. Let’s toast to peace, prosperity, and a sustainable future with a glass of water.
