The Global Sustainable Development Report 2023 identified that facilitating synergies and eliminating trade-offs between different SDGs is a key for transformation. This session introduces ongoing research on synergies and trade-offs in some institutions where IGS members in the past GSDR are based and discusses research frontiers on the issue with the purpose of facilitating transformations to achieve the SDGs.
Implementation of the SDGs relies on localized actions and local contexts. Therefore, systematic case studies and the collection of empirical data on context-specific synergies and trade-offs play a critical role in drawing lessons on how transformations take place. This event is an initial stage of the project exploring synergies and tradeoffs between SDG targets, and tries to showcase a few examples from Japan, Finland and Sweden on this issue, with the vision that understanding synergies and tradeoffs plays a pivotal role in Voluntary National Reviews (VNR), and expected to be an integral part to consider global goals beyond 2030.
This event will encourage discussion and extend collaboration and partnerships on the role of SDG synergies and trade-offs for SDG acceleration.
