Under the umbrella of a larger global report, Lancet Countdown – an annual report tracking the connections between public health and climate change – also produced briefs profiling individual countries and the unique health implications they face as a result of climate change.
SEI Research Fellow Ploy Achakulwisut served as a Working Group member and reviewer for the U.S. Brief, which gives recommendations on how the country can promote health and equity through climate action.
The US Brief connected to the report, Lancet Countdown: tracking progress on health and climate change, gives an overview of the state of climate change and public health in the US, highlighting factors such as air pollution, heat, infections disease, drought, sea level rise and greenhouse gas emissions.
The brief offers four recommendations the US can adopt to improve health through climate measures:
The brief also explores locally acquired malaria and dengue cases, the air quality effects of the 2023 Canadian wildfires and the health equity benefits of a renewable energy transition.
