SEI is building a water allocation and hydrology model in the Upper Klamath River basin in the Northwest US.
2022
The Klamath River is one of the most complex watersheds in the western United States. In recent decades, unprecedented droughts have exacerbated challenges of excessive water allocation in the basin. Starting in 2022, SEI began work with Sustainable Northwest and AMP Insights to construct a water allocation and hydrology model in the Upper Klamath basin in Oregon near the border of California.
Using SEI’s WEAP software, the model will be used to help explore the relationships between forestry conditions, supply, diversions, groundwater interactions, and operational flexibility in the Upper Klamath basin. The model will be run under a suite of climate projections and landscape conditions to evaluate the impacts on local diversions, operations, and fisheries. The model will also be run under a range of restoration actions and demand scenarios, with alternative human diversions and management in the basin.
