Sports and Environment training for Confederation of Africa Athletics Member Federations

Held during the 2024 edition of the African Athletics Championship in Douala, SEI Africa, in collaboration with Athletics Kenya and Athletics Cameroon, will lead a strategic engagement to promote sustainability in sports in Yaounde.

SEI Africa in partnership with Athletics Kenya and UNEP has been leading the effort to help sports federations across Africa integrate sustainability into their activities.

This mission aims to deploy an air quality sensor at the Championship venue, conduct a training program on sports and sustainability, and explore potential collaboration with the Sub-regional Institute of Statistics and Applied Economics (ISSEA) of Yaoundé.

Objectives:

1. Deploy an Air Quality Sensor at the venue of the African Athletics Championship in Douala.

2. Organize the Second Edition of Training representatives from athletic federations on sports and sustainability.

3. Engage with ISSEA in Yaoundé for a potential Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI), focusing on advanced research on air quality modeling and forecasting in Yaoundé.

4. Visit and take stock of the two air quality sensors previously deployed in Yaoundé for maintenance.

Expected Outcomes:

1. Successful deployment and operation of the air quality sensor at the African Athletics Championship Venue in Douala.

2. Enhanced knowledge and capacity of athletic federation representatives on integrating sports and sustainability.

3. Established groundwork for a formal partnership between SEI and ISSEA, focusing on research and air quality.

4. Maintenance of the sensors and air quality data analysis of both sensors during the engagement meeting with ISSEA
