SEI Finance for Sustainable Development Programme hosted a webinar on the role of risk mitigation instruments when attracting private finance to renewable energy projects in Southern Africa.
SEI speakers included Daniel Duma at SEI Headquarters and Miquel Muñoz Cabré at SEI US.
This webinar explored the role of risk mitigation instruments in attracting private finance to renewable energy projects in Southern Africa. The discussion focused on lessons learned from structuring and financing large utility scale solar projects in Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia and Zambia. The webinar included presentations from Scaling Solar and GETFiT, two leading DFI-led risk mitigation programs.
In addition, the scope, effectiveness, limitations and potential for improvement of risk mitigation instruments were analyzed, particularly in the current context of high indebtedness in Africa.
The webinar marked the launch of a new SEI report on risk mitigation for renewable energy investments, the result of a collaboration between SEI and the Industrial Development Corporation of Zambia and the University of Cape Town Power Futures Lab.
SEI report / This report explores the role of risk mitigation and transfer (RMT) instruments for enabling renewable energy investments in SADC countries.
