This Africa Climate Week session falls under “enabling the future – Seizing transformation opportunities, exploring technology innovation, and investing in breakthrough solutions”. It includes a presentation of the key results of the Integrated Assessment of Air Pollution and Climate Change for Sustainable Development in Africa report for different sectors and a panel discussion highlighting the necessary next steps and financing to turn the key outputs from the Assessment into practical action.
The upcoming Integrated Assessment of Air Pollution and Climate Change for Sustainable Development in Africa report led by the African Union Commission (AUC), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC), and SEI outlines pathways which can reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, Short-lived Climate Pollutants (SLCPs) and other air pollutants and simultaneously prevent hundreds of thousands of annual premature deaths across Africa from improved air quality while achieving regional climate benefits and progress towards the Africa-wide development goals outlined in the Africa Union’s Agenda 2063, and the sustainable development goals (SDGs). The assessment has been developed by over 100 scientists and experts from Africa and internationally, and outlines 37 concrete, specific measures that can enable Africa to transition to a low-emission, health-positive and resilient trajectory.
During the event, representatives from countries, Regional Economic Communities (RECs) and industry will present examples of actions that are being taken to reduce SLCPs and GHGs in advancing some of the measures identified in the assessment at city, national, regional and continental levels.
This event contributes to the International Day of Clean Air for blue skies on 7 September 2022.
