The project has three components. SEI has been commissioned to:

  • develop a global baseline that outlines the gaps in needed support that must be filled to expand and speed up action on the SDGs at the local level. The baseline will include selected case studies from around the world. Researchers will also outline global issues that affect local-level progress.
  • develop a 10-year strategy for the Local2030 Coalition, a UN-led platform and network designed to support and accelerate local-level delivery of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 component SDGs.
  • conduct a participatory consultation process, including workshops and interviews, to inform the baseline and the strategy.

The project involves the participation of researchers in SEI Africa, Asia, Headquarters and Latin America.

The project (“PO-2200177912 Supporting and Accelerating the Localization of the Sustainable Development Goals”) involves a wide range of participating stakeholders and organizations. Many local actors have contributed information about their experiences to underpin the case studies.

The project involves input from key stakeholders from international organizations, national governments, networks, local governments and representatives of the Executive Office of the United Nations Secretary-General (EOSG), the United Nations Humane Settlement Programme (UN-HABITAT), the United Nations Development Programme, (UNDP), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the United Nations Development Coordination Office (DCO), the United Nations Regional Commissions, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the International Labour Organization (ILO), the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA).
