We support the implementation of a sustainable transition in BiH through institutional reforms and the empowerment of people from all walks of life.

The project Sustainable Transition of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH SuTra) will be delivered through activities grouped under two components:

Environmental Governance & Capacity Building aims to ensure effective and efficient implementation of environmental policies as the critical step for creating good enabling conditions for a green and sustainable transition in line with the EU accession process requirements. This will be achieved through policy support and capacity building, which will rely on Swedish expertise and examples of good practice.

Supporting the Transition of Coal Regions in BiH will support the local bottom-up approach for creating Transition Plans and implementing comprehensive transition policies in local governments in coal regions in BIH, including just transition, decarbonization and circular economy.

The project will be implemented with the support of a different bodies at the state level, entity/district level and local level.

Gender equality, social equity and poverty reduction are both outcomes of and conditions for sustainable transitions and therefore mainstreamed throughout the BiH project.

BiH and SEI previous collaboration on environmental and sustainable transition policies

While progress has been made over the last decade in addressing environmental issues, there is still scope to improve legislative frameworks and enforcement of environmental policies in BiH. In 2019-2023 BiH developed its countrywide comprehensive Environmental Strategy (BiH ESAP 2030+) which is developed and going through the adoption process. The process was facilitated by SEI with support from the Embassy of Sweden in BiH. Read more about the project here.

The BiH ESAP 2030+ serves as a long-term planning framework that allows for coherent environmental practices and actions across BiH. It has the potential to becomea key tool for authorities to achieve environmental sustainability and improve the health and well-being of citizens for present and future generations. BiH Sutra is the continuation of ESAP.
