Carina Mueller

Carina Mueller is a Research Fellow at SEI Headquarters – Trase Team and Initiative – Global Agendas, Climate and Systems Division.

Her work aims to improve methods and data to account for carbon emissions from land use change and agricultural practices linked to commodity supply chains, and to drive uptake of improved data and methods by companies, governments and financial institutions. The focus of her work is on tropical regions and land uses/commodities (especially soy, pasture/beef, cocoa, palm oil and wood pulp).

In her previous research she was interested in understanding environmental impacts of land use and land use change associated with traded agricultural commodities to support decision-making towards sustainable production and consumption. In this context, she combined spatial data analyses, Life Cycle Assessment principles and physical trade flow analysis methods.

Carina holds a PhD in Environmental Economics and Environmental Management from SEI York and the University of York (2022). She also earned a BSc (2008) and MSc (2012) in Environmental Sciences from the University of Bayreuth in Germany and a Postgraduate Diploma (2010) in Conservation Biology from the University of Wellington in New Zealand.

Prior to her PhD, she has been working as an environmental sustainability scientist for a consumer goods company. Here she contributed to the application and methodological development of environmental Life Cycle Assessment and sustainability assessments to guide decision-making within innovation, supply chain and marketing.
