SEI LA and the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) join efforts to evaluate and improve business models for the sustainable use of biodiversity to move towards a sustainable bioeconomy. This will not only contribute to food security but also will allow supporting conservation activities and financing the management of biodiversity in the Rupununi-Guyana.
The Sustainable Wildlife Management (SWM) program is an initiative of the ACP Secretariat, funded by the 11th European Development Fund (EDF), and implemented through a partnership involving the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Cooperation Center for Agricultural Research for Development (CIRAD), the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) and the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS).
In a first phase, SEI LA conducted an analysis of the inland fisheries value chain including commercial fisheries, sports fisheries and ornamental fish to identify opportunities for sustainable use agreements. This project will strengthen current business models around the use of biodiversity and will promote new ones, based on the work hand-by-hand with the local communities and the analysis of sectorial global trends, such as sport fishing and pet trade. These business models will have sustainability not only as a guideline but as a requirement to be implemented.
The promotion of sustainable business models, and the focus on the market, aim to the financial sustainability of the projects and their continuity beyond international cooperation. As these business models will be built with a sustainable purpose, they will also give the funding for and allow the continuity of conservation activities for biodiversity management in the Rupununi.
