SEI at COP28

SEI’s delegation is hosting several side events and contributing to over 20 events at the United Nations Climate Change Conference or Conference of the Parties, COP28. Drawing on SEI’s five priorities, our researchers will share new insights on topics such as climate finance, transboundary climate risks and energy transition.

The path to a fossil fuel phase-out

The findings of the Production Gap Report 2023 will serve as backdrop for a lively exploration of how countries can align their plans for coal, oil, and gas production with Paris Agreement commitments.

A panel will discuss opportunities for policy and leadership in phasing out fossil fuels.

Designing coherent and equitable climate policies for a just transition

Achieving just transitions will require policy tools that help national governments balance their climate and development goals. This event will explore how climate policies can be designed coherently to enable a just transition and ensure that adaptation and mitigation measures account for existing inequalities, address development needs for vulnerable groups, and leave no one behind.

Join us and listen to examples on how interactions between climate change, sustainable development and inequality can be managed within national contexts to achieve a just transition.

Bridging the gap: integrating carbon inequality into the climate conversation

Our side event will have a panel discussion on the topic of carbon inequality, highlighting its importance in the negotiations. What do equitable climate solutions mean? This will be followed by a moderated Q&A session on economic policy measures that can tackle inequality and achieve emissions reduction. We will then have a presentation of the new carbon inequality data available on the emissions inequality dashboard.

Online dialogue: post-COP28 analysis

COP28 marks the conclusion of the first global stocktake. Did we come up with a roadmap to accelerate climate action? Was an agreement on operationalising the Loss and Damage Fund achieved? What questions were left unsolved and what issues need to be addressed before the next conference of parties in 2024?

We gather a prominent panel to share insights into the COP28 negotiations.
