Program

SEI Finance for Sustainable Development Programme

Our goal is to help accelerate the allocation of capital to truly sustainable economic activities required to deliver the SDGs and global climate targets.

We do so by conducting solutions-oriented research that critically examines the financial landscape and provides expertise on the key sustainability transitions our economies must undertake. We have a special focus on advancing the sustainability agenda for developing countries.

We aim to understand the processes, limitations and perspectives of various actors involved in developing and financing sustainable projects and to identify the required policy interventions that can make more projects viable in the regions that need them most.

The programme performs practice-driven and solutions-oriented research on sustainability, public policy, business, economics, climate and development finance.

The programme also engages with stakeholders through training and knowledge sharing, to provide and exchange relevant sustainability expertise with actors in the real economy, the financial sector, and policymakers.

Our research currently focuses on mobilizing private and public finance for sustainable economic activities in developing countries, looking at blended structures, risk mitigation and transfer, green and sustainable instruments, and others. We also contribute to subjects such as transitions to net-zero, industrial decarbonization in developing countries, the suitability of different public and private solutions for sustainability objectives, and the international climate and development finance architecture.

The core of the research in the programme is performed by SEI researchers and the programme is organized under SEI’s Development and Aid Policy Team. However, the team collaborate on research projects with various national and international partners.
