Regional cooperation for innovative bioeconomy pathways to promote health and well-being

This two-part workshop at the Global Bioeconomy Summit 2020 engaged participants in a broad discussion about how regional bioeconomy cooperation can promote health, well-being, and resilience.

16 to 18 November 2020

The SEI Initiative on Governing Bioeconomy Pathways hosted a workshop at the Global Bioeconomy Summit 2020 (GBS 2020) on 16 November from 16:00–18:00 CET, and on 18 November from 8:00–10:00 CET together with Applied Biotech, the University of Bonn and the Science Center Jülich. GBS 2020 is a high-level, biennial international conference with a mission to provide thought leadership in effectively shaping global bioeconomy policy and to share in the global responsibility of contributing to sustainable development.

The focus of many bioeconomy strategies, ranging from thenational to local level, have typically tended towards bioresource and bio-based product development efforts. The ongoing global pandemic has, however, highlighted the need to re-focus efforts on health and well-being, including not only direct impacts but also disruptions in global supply chains, infrastructure, and social networks. Future bioeconomy pathways need to, therefore, acknowledge the importance of such issues.

In this workshop, we engaged participants in a dialogue that adopted a broad perspective on how regional bioeconomy cooperation can promote health, well-being, and resilience, drawing lessons from both sub-themes and regions.

The workshop was designed across two two-hour sessions so as to also facilitate participation from different regions and time zones. A broad perspective in thematic terms can be obtained by drawing on holistic frameworks such as OneHealth, EcoHealth, and Planetary Health. Key thematic components identified by participants were discussed in regional breakout groups in order to differentiate priorities based on the wide variation in the bioresource base, development aims, and institutional capacities in different regions.
